Scary Movie is a 2000 comedy/spoof film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, as part of Wayans Bros. Entertainment. It is an American dark comedy which parodies the horror, slasher, and mystery genres. Several mid-and late-1990s films are spoofed, including The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, The Matrix, and The Blair Witch Project, with a significant portion of the film's plot being dedicated to the more subtle horror film parody series Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. In addition, the film parodies classic horror films, most notably Scream.
The tagline is "No mercy. No shame. No sequel.", with the last reference being to the tendency of popular horror movies to become long-running franchises. However, in 2001, Scary Movie 2 was released (with the tagline "We lied"). The film was followed by a series of sequels Scary Movie 3 (2003), and Scary Movie 4 (2006). The original title for the film Scream was "Scary Movie" which ironically was later used to parody it. Both films were released through Dimension Films.
On Halloween night, 18-year-old Drew Decker receives a phone call from an unnamed man (Ghostface Killer). He says he's watching her (a joke; he's looking at a picture of her in a porno mag), then he breaks into the house. Scared, Drew grabs a banana and runs outside brandishing it. He chases her and rips her clothes off, revealing her white bra and thong. She runs away--straight into the sprinklers. Her father drives toward her and she calls to him to help her, but he doesn't notice her because her mother is giving him oral sex, and he ends up running her over (still not noticing). The killer finishes her off.
The next day at school, Cindy Campbell meets up with her boyfriend Bobby (the night before, he snuck into her bedroom and made-out on her bed before he got electrocuted by her electric underwear)and other friends Brenda, Ray, Greg, and Buffy. News teams, among them Gail Hailstorm, are there trying to interview Drew's classmates. Cindy points out that Drew's murder happened exactly 1 year after they accidentally killed a man during a
car ride and dumped his body off the pier.
One night Cindy is attacked by the killer, but she calls the police and the killer escapes. Bobby soon arrives with the same gloves and knife as the killer, and is arrested.
The group receives a warning note from someone who claims to know about the man they killed. then they are killed one by one: first Greg; then Buffy; then Ray. The killer attempts to kill Brenda in a theater, but fellow patrons beat him to it, upset about her rude behavior.
Cindy throws a house party; the killer appears and starts killing guests. Bobby is released from jail and turns up at the party and he and Cindy have sex. Afterwards, the killer stabs Bobby and disappears. As Cindy tends to Bobby's wounds, Bobby shoots Shorty and claims that HE was never actually stabbed. Then Ray arrives and says that he and Bobby are copying the serial killer. When Cindy asks for a motive, Bobby says that they don't need one, because Scream had
plot, and other horror movies also lack logically coherent elements like plot or motive. Bobby sarcastically quips that he was driven to it by lack of sex and that he and Ray are homosexual lovers (Ray denies this despite several clear indications) who will start a new life once they kill Cindy; they'll get away with it because they're merely copycatting the real killer.
To conceal their guilt, they decide to stab each other so that the authorities will believe them to be victims of the real killer. However, right after Ray has (by accident) fatally stabbed Bobby, a third Ghostface appears and fatally stabs Ray. He collapses on top of Bobby in an incidental sexual position.
The killer then attacks Cindy, but she manages to subdue him. The police arrive and take Cindy to the police station, where they find out that Buffy's brother Doofy was actually faking his mental retardation and is the real killer and in cahoots with Gail Hailstorm. After Doofy and Gail escape, the sheriff and Cindy find Doofy's disguise in the street. While reacting to this, Cindy is run over by a passing car.
As the credits roll, Shorty parodies Randy's rules of survival in the Scream franchise by explaining via videocassette that he didn't make it but providing the rules for surviving "this situation"--which appears to be for the horror film, but are really instructions for surviving a snatch-and-run.
